Does a plate need to be round? Why couldn’t a teapot look like a house? CHIL-DISH turns children’s drawings into real tableware. The project merges the imagination and enthusiasm of kids, modern technology, design and food.
CHIL-DISH made its official kick off in spring 2015 when kids were asked to draw “the world’s greatest” tableware. The proposals ranged from a Batman plate to a cake-stealing device used by bandits. The pinnacle of this process took place at Helsinki Design Week’s Children’s Weekend held last autumn during which nearly 300 drawings were handed in.
From this bunch a total of ten imaginative tableware designs were selected and modeled as 3D versions. These models were then sent to the 3D printing service Shapeways in New York from which they returned back to Helsinki within two weeks - now in a glossy, physical form.
The biggest challenge was to interpret the kids’ drawings and turn them into functional and printable objects without losing the original idea.
CHIL-DISH culminated in the Michelin-starred restaurant Olo on Saturday 12 March 2016. The makers of the ten winning drawings were paired with ten top chefs from Finland. Each pair created a wonderful dish to be served naturally from the tableware the child had drawn. Click HERE to browse through the winning designs of the first CHIL-DISH event!
Anna van der Lei is a Dutch-Finnish designer. She graduated from Design Academy Eindhoven in 2008 and worked in London for a renowned design studio before moving to Helsinki to do her Masters Degree and getting in touch with her Finnish roots. At the moment she works as lecture in contemporary design at the Aalto University. Personal stories and finding the extraordinary in the ordinary guide her work both as a designer and a teacher.
Kristos Mavrostomos, a Finn with a Greek touch, did his Masters Degree at the Aalto University. After graduation he has mostly worked in the fields of social design and applied arts focusing on research, writing, curating and product design. A background in industrial design has given the knowledge on materials and technologies but what motivates him the most are the skilled people he has had the chance to work with.
